James C. Carter, general counsel at Nike Inc., on Tuesday began his duty as a Port of Portland commissioner.
Carter was appointed by Gov. Ted Kulongoski in September to replace William D. Thorndike, president of Medford Fabrication, whose term expired in November.
Prior to joining Nike in 1998 Carter was a managing shareholder at the law firm of Schulte, Anderson. He currently serves on the University of Oregon School of Law Dean’s Advisory Board and on the board of the Confucius Institute at Portland State University.
The nine-member commission sets port policy. Members are appointed by the governor and ratified by the state Senate before serving four-year terms.
